Maybe they can start growing some lion-sized juevos and turn into roaring lions. That is probably a wishful dream on my part. But strange things have been known to happen.
Mario Castillo and Joaquin Martinez are a lot late to the party. I wonder if they watch the news; only a blind, deaf person would not realize that the City of Houston Police were working with ICE. But at least now they are at least claiming that they care; time will tell us if it is only a farce to let brown skinned folks think that they care. But at least they got there. Where are all the other Hispanic elected officials?
Council Member Mario Castillo, who has advocated relentlessly for transparency during his term so far, called for a public explanation on how Houston’s police department has worked with ICE. Castillo said he was pausing all monetary requests from his office for HPD overtime funding until he knew the dollars weren’t being used on ICE collaboration.
“Reports that HPD has been coordinating with ICE contradicts months of public statements to the contrary,” Castillo posted on X.
Joaquin Martinez, too, took to Facebook to write a message to immigrant and undocumented constituents.
“While some might try to inflame distrust between our immigrant families and local government, we must stand together, to support one another, and to make sure every Houstonian feels safe calling for help, going to work and sending their children to school,” he wrote. “Immigration enforcement may be a federal issue, but building trust, safety and inclusion is local work — and that’s where my focus remains.”
The damage that Whitmire has done to the relationship between the police and the immigrant community will take years, if not decades, to undo. Even though all my family members are citizens, I do not readily pick up the phone to report problems that a police officer could resolve. I don’t want to be the reason that some hardworking Hispanic gets reported to ICE, leaving his family without financial support. Young children are likely citizens of this country.
