Gay power v Black power brewing in Texas

Well, the power struggle is in the counties and surrounding areas where such power is concentrated, namely, Harris and Dallas counties.

We just saw a Houston City Council seat switch from Black to Gay. Very seldom do people or groups willingly give up power, and political office is power. I could argue that it went from Black to Brown, but I am not convinced that Alejandra Salinas sees herself as Latina first and gay second. I did support her, and my family did likewise. That was because we saw Boykins as aligned with Whitmire and the MAGAs. Hispanics will now claim that we have four Hispanics in the city council, two of whom are gay and one is a Republican. They will leave out the latter part of the previous sentence. The Gay community will now claim that they have two openly Gay Council Members. A win-win, I guess.

Dallas area

U.S. Reps. Jasmine Crockett, Julie Johnson and Marc Veasey currently serve three heavily Democratic districts in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. But all three saw their seats overhauled, with Johnson’s turned into a safely Republican district that stretches into East Texas, and Veasey’s hometown and political base of Fort Worth removed altogether from his district.

But Johnson, the only remaining incumbent, still ended up with a tough primary race.

Rather than having to take on Crockett or Veasey, Johnson is facing a primary with her predecessor — former U.S. Rep. Colin Allred. Allred, a Democrat who represented the Dallas-based 32nd Congressional District for three terms before losing the 2024 Senate race, had been running for Senate again this cycle. He dropped out Monday and pivoted to the 33rd Congressional District — where Johnson had already announced her intent to run — in anticipation of Crockett’s entry to the Senate race.

North Texas Democrats blame Republican redistricting for kicking off the series of decisions that led to the primary. But Crockett’s last-minute decision to run for Senate — which she announced on the filing deadline — meant there was little time for candidates to resolve issues behind the scenes.

Though only a few days old, the Congressional District 33 primary has already grown contentious. Equality PAC, which works to elect LGBTQ+ candidates and which includes Johnson on its board, issued a warning shot to Allred Sunday night.

“At a time when Trump and the GOP target the #LGBTQ community, the last thing a Democrat should do is try to unseat the first openly LGBTQ Member of Congress from Texas,” the group wrote. “Unconscionable.”

I don’t think that the Black community is ceding power quietly; they are not going to give up a congressional district to a Hispanic, not even to an incumbent Hispanic, Sylvia Garcia.

Jarvis Johnson For Congress

Jarvis Johnson believes that strong communities are built on strong local economies. As a former small business owner and state representative, he knows firsthand the challenges entrepreneurs face—from accessing capital to navigating bureaucracy. In Congress, he will fight to expand small business funding, support workforce development, and bring federal investments directly into neighborhoods that have long been overlooked. Johnson will convene local leaders and business owners across the 29th District to build a coordinated economic strategy that uplifts working families, creates jobs, and keeps wealth circulating in our communities—not siphoned off by corporate special interests.

What do I think will occur?

There will be hard feelings between Hispanics and Blacks (I expect Sylvia Garcia to lose). There will be hard feelings between Gay People and Black people. In the end, the MAGA Party will win; they know how to play the groups against each other. The MAGAs intentionally caused the problems in Congress. The Gay community is to blame for what happened here in Houston. They saw an upcoming low-turnout election, recruited a strong candidate to run for a seat held by an African-American, and took advantage of it. There is another such battle coming up in March, Parker v Plummer. I expect a run-off in that election.

Y Los Pobras Mexicanos

Well, not because someone is leading them, but they will be the actual power brokers in Texas. That “Slave Mentality” that Jasmine Crockett referred to is what will cause Hispanics to swing right or left. So will the dog be wagging the tail or will the tail be wagging the dog?
