It makes me sick and angry when I watch the video. That person was murdered in cold blood, in my opinion, and the idiot that Americans elected had the following to say.
The Democrats are finally realizing that immigration is something they have to pay attention to. It was okay as long as it was primarily happening to people of color; what is one less Mexican, or one less Black? They are starting to say something not because they may give a shit, but because it may be politically correct. As the fascists, Republicans, like to say, all lives matter. They do.
She was a citizen, yes, she was. Are the lives of citizens more important?
She was a Christian, yes, she was. Are the lives of Christians more important?
While you won’t hear it, she was white; the photos of a blond, skinned woman tell us that. She was working to help immigrants. Her life mattered; all lives matter to those who love them.
Here in Houston, Lina Hidalgo finally found a voice.
Sylvia Garcia, fighting for her political career, is finally finding her voice.
Even the MAGA mayor, John Whitmire, is finding that his work with ICE may backfire.
Others are now realizing the truth of what I have stated.
There is a long American tradition of using state violence to maintain the social and political order. We have done it to enslaved people and their descendants, to Indigenous nations, to immigrants, to strikers, to radicals, to the poor. We have done it so consistently that entire institutions evolved to make it feel normal. Violence is, sadly, as American as apple pie.
What’s different about Renee Nicole Good is not that she was killed by ICE in what certainly looks like an “unjustified shooting.”
What’s different is who she is understood to be. She was not just white. She was fully white.
For generations, marginalized whites and non-white people have been beaten, shot, surveilled, and imprisoned whenever the state decided it needed to. Coal miners in West Virginia. The Wobblies in Everett. Italian immigrants in New Orleans. Black Americans everywhere, always. Mexican Americans nearly everywhere/always. And Native people at Wounded Knee—twice..
