I’ammmmmmm Backkkkkkkkkkk

Eight days without power and 12 days without internet, but for my phone.

I could lie and say that I miss the sound of the generators lulling me to sleep. I don’t.

I could lie and say that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, but at my age, it is not valid anymore. I can’t take the heat as I could when I was young. Hurricane Alicia, which hit Houston in August of 83, kept me without power for nearly three weeks. I was in a tiny nested area of two houses because my neighbor did not allow his trees to be trimmed. Those were three very miserable weeks.

I did have a generator this time, which allowed me to keep the refrigerator and fans running. However, the generator I used from Hurricane Ike for about four days quit on me. I rushed to Lowe’s and purchased a Generac generator. The circuit breakers on that generator kept tripping, so my brother brought me the one he was no longer using, as his power had been restored.

I finally got my power back, but the internet was not functioning. Water had blown the top of the box outside and damaged the inside. ATT finally sent a technician, and my internet was repaired. I got a new modem with fiberglass to the modem and Wi-Fi 6, so some good came out of that. My devices are much faster now.

Before the next hurricane hits, I will have at least one window unit, maybe two, to help keep me and my family comfortable.

We did not have Air Conditioners when I grew up; we had outdoor toilets until I was 12 or 13. We knew how to handle the heat. Shower before you go to bed and have a fan running that will keep you cool during the night. That humidity that we love to hate is like spraying a fine mist of water. It is best if the fan is by the window to draw the cool air from the outside. The nights were in the high 70s, which is comfortable, at least for me.
