More evidence that Latinos are turning against the MAGA Party.

I wrote that immigration would be a big issue and that politicians needed to recognize it. Back on January 12th, I wrote the following:

I have been following candidates to see which are willing to at least take a stand on what ICE is doing to brown skinned folks. Now, ICE has taken to killing white women. One would think that might bring out more politicians who like to test the water before deciding whether to support something. Not even that has Gina Hinojosa daring to say anything strongly opposing what Trump and Abbott are doing. She could agree that people here illegally should be deported. I see no problem with that, I agree. How they are going about doing it by targeting people who look Mexican is not the right way, nor the American way. Some of us fought too hard to level the playing field for people like Hinojosa to pretend they don’t see the injustice. The other two candidates are not much better, especially Bobby Cole. Chris Bell actually seems more aware of what is happening to what is probably the largest voting bloc in the State of Texas, which goes Red or Blue in recent elections.

I don’t think people realize it’s a Pete Wilson moment unfolding; it could turn Texas Blue for a long time.

Pete Wilson was California’s governor and is credited with turning California Blue with the hateful bills targeting Latinos.

These maps show how Latino voters helped Democrats flip a reliably red Texas Senate seat

Democrat Taylor Rehmet’s stunning upset victory is explained in part by the massive swing by Latino voters toward his campaign compared to other Democrats in recent elections.

by Alejandro Serrano and Apurva Mahajan

Precincts in Senate District 9 with a majority of Hispanic residents swung on average 34 percentage points toward Rehmet compared to the margin garnered by the Democratic nominee in 2022, when the seat was last on the ballot.

Across the entire district, VoteHub estimated that Rehmet captured about 79% of the Hispanic vote, a 26-point improvement on the 53% that went for Democrat Kamala Harris in 2024 — the biggest shift of any racial group in the district.

Republicans are not stupid; they have already noticed the shift in the Latino votes and have quit posting as many videos and images of them pointing guns at women and children, and other videos that show them as Gestapos targeting Brown and Black folks. Being a citizen does not stop them from targeting you if you fit the category. I now carry my birth certificate with me, something that I did not necessarily have to do since our family had to carry proof of citizenship in the 1950s. I have traveled through most of the states in our country and never worried about having to prove my citizenship; I do now.
