Corpus Christi, Texas, and Chihuahua, Mexico. Seagulls need more than the ocean’s misty, salty spray; they need fresh water falling from the sky.
Two for two. By the Rain Man’s accounting, that is a perfect record—and Santiago and I see no reason to remain modest about it. We are banging our chests while the weather cooperates.
Now our attention turns across the Atlantic to Sussex, England. Ardingly Reservoir was only 20.2 percent full in its October 4 update, and the people there could use a good, soaking rain.
England needing rain may surprise some Americans. We imagine umbrellas, gray skies, and people discussing the weather over tea. Apparently, even the English clouds occasionally neglect their responsibilities.
So today, October 11, Meme the Rain Man offers a prayer for Sussex: May the rain come gently and steadily, replenish the reservoirs, nourish the fields, and bring relief to the people who need it. Enough to help, without flooding anyone’s home.
Sussex also has Brighton & Hove Albion, the Seagulls. While we are putting in requests, a few extra goals would be welcome—but water comes first.
Santiago will watch the reports. I will handle the prayer. If the rain arrives, we shall graciously allow the meteorologists to explain how it happened.
They have their instruments. We have our timing.
Miracles and prayer aren’t overnight; we have to give God time to consider my prayers and decide whether Sussex is worthy of divine intervention. So if it doesn’t rain, maybe the folks from Sussex need to look at why God deemed them unworthy.
