Interesting reading; it didn’t say much about why Whitmire shouldn’t be criticized by the Times, but it does try to defend his weakness or inability to tackle problems in the most Democratic City in the state. It does not matter that the issues are so significant and we live in the most Republican state in the union; we don’t live in the most Republican State.
I brought out the world’s tiniest violin to play a sad song for Whitmire.
NY Times’ Whitmire profile misses much about Houston.
It feels good when Houston is in the national spotlight for all the right reasons. Our city isn’t perfect, but there’s a lot of good here.
So the New York Times profile of Mayor John Whitmire this week had me hopefully optimistic. The headline: “The Democratic Mayor Who Thinks Cities Are Handling Trump Wrong.”
Whitmire appears dapper in a blue suit and a purple tie. It’s a good look.
“Mayor John Whitmire of Houston believes the best way to govern a diverse, immigrant-heavy city in the current political climate is by keeping your head down and your ambitions modest,” the article states.
What does it mean to lead Houston’s dynamic multi-ethnic Democratic population deep in the heart of the nation’s most Republican state? How do you balance the competing demands of safety, infrastructure and rising costs?
