All it takes is maybe 15% block voting and working together to elect the person who will represent everyone. Before the Voting Rights Act, that is how it worked.
I have been saying for a long time that the VRA was used by the Republicans to make the Democrats the party for Blacks and Hispanics. Where a White person was representing a District, they changed it so that a minority would win the district. Congressional District 18 is a perfect Example, before Al Green, Chris Bell was the representative, and before him, Ken Bentsen. When white people who are scared of their own shadows see all the black and brown people, they shiver in fear; they are a cowardly bunch. How else could one explain how the Republicans keep them in fear of the darkies?
Just means that those who want to be politicians will have to work harder to win, which I think benefits the community.
If you were to ask the average person who their city council member is, they would not be able to name them. One would be lucky if the community knew who the mayor is.
They definitely would not know who their State Representative or State Senator is.
A few may know who their Congressperson is, but not many. Here in Texas, they know who Ted Cruz is because when he goes to the Texas teams’ playoff games, those teams lose. They follow sports and can probably name everyone on their favorite team’s roster.
