The mayor of J City

I don’t know what to make of the new name that Council Member Pollard has designated for District J. I know he has been the best council member since I have lived here, and I have been here for just shy of fifty years.

Should I refer to him as Mayor Pollard? Or should I continue to use Council Member?

Houston Chronicle –The move, which comes down mostly to a name at the end of the day, could prove beneficial if Pollard wants to seek another political office in the future, one expert said.

Pollard, who represents District J in southwest Houston, posted on Linkedin that he would be rebranding his district as “J City,” which will “run like its own municipality with services and programs that are specifically tailored for J City residents.”

“I think part of it may be, you know, he does indeed want to improve his constituent services,” Cross said. “But I also think part of it is to help position himself as a future mayoral candidate.”

Pollard said everything he does as an elected official is to show his vision for the city, not specifically for a higher office.

“Ultimately, when my term is up, I would like to pursue politics as far as I can,” Pollard said.

The council member said he did not have a specific office in mind that he would seek when his term is up in 2028, but that his options would be open and that he would weigh them in the future.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Walking with Edward Pollard down Windswept Lane, he points out hazards.

Illegal vendors congest the road and force walkers into the street, and the vending can lead to health issues.

“This is really what we are trying to illuminate, the waste, the dumping,” Pollard said.

From smell to bacteria and pests, a nearby canal is filled with trash and debris. Pollard said it’s unique problems like that can be overlooked by city services that often have their hands full.

To combat this, Pollard wants to take a more district-first approach. To do that, he’s changing the way he sees the district, not looking at it as a slice of Houston but as its own city, “J City.” District J is in southwest Houston and encompasses Sharpstown, Gulfton, and Westwood.
