We don’t buy US cars because they are shit!

That is a quote from someone in Europe. It made me recall that in the early 1970s, I used to sell used cars at Richardson Chevrolet, at the corner of Hillcroft and the SW Freeway. We used to make fun of the Toyotas as they were cheaply made. Well it seems that the tide has turned and that people around the world now find that our cars are shit.

Jeremy Clarkson couldn’t resist sharing a tongue-in-cheek social media post just hours after US President Donald Trump claimed “America is back” in a controversial and action-packed Congressional speech.

Among the notable talking points, Trump touched upon the 25 percent tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico that took effect yesterday, sending shockwaves through the automotive industry.

“An insight from my dad that @POTUS might find helpful: the reason we don’t by US-made cars in Europe is because they’re s**t,” one person penned on the social media site.

Taking a dig at the US car industry and the need for new tariffs, Clarkson concurred as he typed: “He does have a point.”

I have tried to buy American brands all my life, but finding something that is all American has become impossible. A few years back, I broke down and bought a Toyota Sienna and found that their reputation as the best is well earned.

We are not going to force Americans to buy inferior cars simply because they are made here, and we certainly are not going to force the rest of the world to buy cars that are “shit.”

The days of “What is good for General Motors is good for America,” are long gone.
