Who won last night – Houston

Mayor – John Whitmire

At-Large 1 – Julian Ramirez

At-Large 2 – Willie Davis

At-Large 3- Twila Carter

At-Large – Letitia Plummer

Controller – Chris Hollins

Ramirez can thank the Houston Chronicle for his win; they probably gave him enough votes to get him elected. So let us hope he is like Mitt Romney and not Mike Lee; they are the two US Senators from Utah.

The New York Times refer to John Whitmire as a moderate Democrat, he probably is and it seems that this election may have been about about contracts and not police defunding.

He made public safety the focus of his messaging, following a strategy that has proved successful for moderate Democrats in recent big city mayoral races around the country.

Well, let us hope that he does better than Adams and does not find himself having his phones taken by the FBI.

The reason for that comment above is that Turner has made it clear that this is about contracts, airport contracts in particular. Those contracts are worth millions to the winners.

To give one an idea of the value of those airport concessions, one former city council member, John Peavy, gave up his city council seat rather than give up the airport concession, a small ice cream concession.

As to Whitmire, let us see how you diversify the City’s workforce, starting at the top. You brought it up; let us see if you can make it reflect the face of Houston.
