I don’t think so.
John Whitmire promised many things and that it would not cost the residents of Houston any more money. He lied, but his entire career has been as a politician; why expect anything else from such a person?
The garbage fee will not be used to improve garbage collection but to help pay for Whitmire’s billion-dollar deal with the firefighters.
Charge for parking on the street until 2 a.m. – This will affect some people but not most of the residents of Houston. The areas where you have places that stay open late at night would be the most affected.
Five percent cut across departments, except for police and fire. So not only will we be paying for garbage pickup, we will be getting worse service.
Increase property taxes; why make firefighters rich? Many of them will retire as millionaires. After all, most of them don’t live in Houston, so they won’t be paying their fair share.
There is more because they will be hiring more police and fire personnel, so the cost will be even higher than anticipated or discussed.
