An opinion published in the Chronicle suggests that Deputy Constables are protecting us here, which is nonsense. Meme has never seen a constable patrol a neighborhood he has lived in.
It was misinformation like that below that drew my attention. The public he referred to is the public that can afford to pay for constables to patrol their neighborhoods. Those neighborhoods don’t even pay for the total cost of the patrols—they pay eighty percent (80%), and the rest of us are settled with the 20% that they don’t pay.
One of the articles correctly stated that any attempt to reduce the role of the constables in the community has been met with public outrage. The reason is simple: The constables respond quickly and are more in tune to the community’s needs. These articles seem intended to chip away at that support in order to have less pushback when Commissioners Court comes after the constables again. The citizens have made it clear that they love the service that the constables provide! Source
Constable Mark Herman recently posted a photo of a man who allegedly shoplifted about $30 worth of merchandise from a Walmart. There is a good chance that Walmart pays for constable services.
Houston residents pay for Constables and other county services without ever receiving any benefits for their tax dollars.
