Longtime Democratic strategist James Carville reportedly urged major Democratic donors to stop stumping up cash for candidates who back Joe Biden’s 2024 run, as pressure continued to mount on the president following his disastrous debate performance against Donald Trump last week.
“72% of people want something different. Why not give it to them? They’re just asking for a different choice,” Carville reportedly told dozens of donors during an hour-long private conference call on Tuesday, a recording of which was shared with Semafor.
“What I would say is, if we don’t do something about this, I’m going to put you on call block on my cell phone,” Carville reportedly told the donors.
In another moment, the veteran strategist reportedly talked about how the earliest-ever presidential debate may actually end up benefiting Democrats.
“Maybe we look back on this thing and say, ‘This is the best thing that ever happened to us,’” he said. “If this would have happened to us on October fifth, we’d be more than bruised, screwed and tattooed. Maybe this will set it into motion something different.”
Carville, who was a lead strategist for Bill Clinton’s 1992 campaign, on Monday called on Democrats to “deliver change” and replace Biden as the Democratic presidential candidate.
