While Whitmire did not give the statement, I would be surprised that a department head was allowed to say what he did without prior consent from the mayor. The department head is there at Whitmire’s whim.
The federal government will reimburse the city for the money it spent on picking up the heavy trash caused by Beryl. So, the message the city sends is false, also known as a lie.
In 1983, leaving debris out for a few weeks after a hurricane was considered a health hazard. The Beryl debris has been out for a month now in my neighborhood. It is a health hazard.
John Whitmire loves to blame the previous administration for his failures, but after Harvey, under Mayor Turner, the city picked up debris in less than two weeks after the flooding. I recall that as soon as the city picked up the debris, I would move more of the water-soaked debris to the curb, and within two weeks, they would be there again. Whitmire is over his head and unqualified to lead a city as large as Houston my two cents on John Whitmire.
While reading the morning news, I ran across the following;
Many weeks, that same department struggles to finish its regular garbage and recycling pick-up routes.
The solution to making the department “right sized” as the Wilfalk calls it, is to introduce an extra fee for garbage and recycling service.
Houston is too large not to have one, according to Wilfalk, and services won’t improve in a meaningful way for customers until one is enacted.
“Houston has a choice: you cannot adopt a fee, or we are going to keep having these conversations,” Wilfalk said during a recent interview.
Wilfalk added that his team, along with an outside consultant, is studying what that fee could and should look like, and how it could be charged.
One idea is to make a part of the City of Houston water bills, which have had their own issues.
Wilfalk has no timeline or dollar figure attached to the proposed fee at this point, but the mayor has signaled he is open to hearing about the plan.
Houston City Council would most likely have to approve such a move.
