When will have the first Mexican-American Supreme Court Justice.

When will the first Mexican-American be elected president? I ask that because when I was in the sixth grade, the white teacher asked what we wanted to be when we grew up. I stated president of the United States, and she told me that no Mexican would ever be president. Thus far, she has been correct.

Here in Harris County, the highest elected official is a recent immigrant from Colombia.

Sotomayor is not one of my people; she is Puerto Rican. There is a world of difference between Puerto Ricans and Mexicans, their culture, their food, and their customs. Since WWI, Puerto Ricans have been US citizens; once they got on a boat and got here, they had all the rights of citizens. Mexicans cross a river without proper documents, and they become illegals.

I am not claiming to be Mexican, but the culture I grew up in was closer to Mexican than any other. I am an American who has had to live with the Mexican name in front of the American (Mexican-American). I grew up listening to Tejano music, with the occasional Mexican Ranchera. Movies were more American than Mexican. Food was typical South Texas food, starting with flour tortillas, not the Mexican corn tortilla.

Mexican-Americans are the most unappreciated group of Latinos in the United States. We have been here the longest and yet have not reached the levels that former slaves have reached. It must be that the Other White class is more scary to the White majority population.

I support the Democratic Party not because of anything they have done to help Mexican-Americans but because Trump drove me to them. I know what it was like for people like me in the 1950s, and that was not a good time for my kind. We faced as much discrimination in Texas as the Blacks did.
