Al Green and Edward Pollard are the voices for the Hispanic Community, not any of the Latino elected officials here in Harris County.
Council Member Edward Pollard
When Whitmire rewarded the Hispanic community for supporting him by placing a homeless shelter there, only one council member voted against it, and that was Council Member Edward Pollard.
Supporting the homeless shelter in the area were three Hispanic council members: Julian Ramirez, at-large; Mario Castillo, from District H; and Joaquin Martinez, from District I.
The measure passed with a majority vote, though one council member opposed the purchase, citing ongoing concerns about safety and community impact.
Councilmember Edward Pollard, who represents District J, said he could not support the proposal,
Whitmire ran for more police on the street. Instead, whenever there is a pet project of his, he ties police officers to mini-substations.
During Wednesday’s meeting, Mayor John Whitmire revealed new details about security plans for the facility. He said the site will have eight Houston Police Department officers and a sergeant assigned full time, calling it a “mini-substation.”

Congressman Al Green
Harris County does have one Hispanic Congressperson, and that would be Sylvia Garcia. I often get requests for donations from her, as I contribute to many Democratic candidates, not just here in Harris County but throughout the United States. While I don’t contribute very much to our local Democratic Party, I have been known to donate to the Harris County Democratic Party.
I don’t contribute to Sylvia Garcia because she may be the voice for some of her constituents, but it is not the voice of the Hispanic Community in Harris County. If she were a man, I would say that she has no juevas (balls, in slang). She doesn’t stand up for the Hispanic Community, like too many of our politicians; she looks to her source of where she gets the bulk of her campaign funds to decide what to support. Unfortunately poor “Mexicans” no dan dinero, don’t give money. That is my opinion; if I am wrong, she is certainly welcome to correct me.
Congressman Al Green has a history of standing up for the Hispanic community, especially the immigrant community. The late Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee was always there for the Hispanic Community.
Most recently, he is the Congressman who got the mother of the autistic child that HPD turned over to immigration to visit with her son. Where was Sylvia Garcia?
At a press conference Wednesday at Congressman Al Green’s office, Maria, the teen’s mother, described the meeting as both joyful and heartbreaking. Maria said her hope remains the same, to reunite with her son and to take him home.
Congressman Green called the case “a mission of mercy,” adding that while the family’s full reunion has yet to happen, “today has been a good day, and some good things have happened.”
