Going to jail in Harris County can be a one way ticket to Africa or El Salvador

With Hispanics like Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, who needs a Sheriff Apario?

Not legally here —maybe you have your resident card —but twenty years ago you pled guilty to avoid a trial. No problem, as chances are that ICE will flag you and come and pick you to send to the infamous El Salvador prison, or to some country in Africa.

Gonzalez can claim that Texas law requires him to do that, but let us be honest and tell the community that if you land in jail and you are here illegally, there is a very good chance that ICE will come for you. ICE checks the status of all individuals who enter the Harris County jail.

Once a person is in jail for any offense, ICE agents can check their immigration status, and if they’re undocumented, ask sheriffs — who commonly run the jails — to hold the person for them so they can be transferred to ICE custody and deported.

“Sometimes it’s been as simple as a traffic ticket for not wearing a seat belt…

“ICE agents visit Harris County jail almost daily and can access jail records to conduct their own immigration checks, said Jason Spencer, the agency’s chief of staff. The jail honors ICE’s request to hold inmates suspected of being in the country illegally, Spencer said.” Source

In case you missed it, the City of Houston also sends people to the county jail; it no longer has a municipal jail like it used to. Not wearing a helmet and being under 18 can land you in jail; it all depends on the officer who stops you.

Wonder if Ed Gonzalez could tell us how his family became American citizens? How long have they been here? Did they come here legally? I don’t mind telling people that my parents were born here, as were my grandparents, and great-grandparents. I am proud to be an eighth-generation Tejano.

There are words for people like Sheriff Gonzalez and Commissioner Adrian Garcia, hypocrites.
