First: Whitmire has an ego bigger than the state of Texas to assume that his actions are what have stopped ICE from coming to Houston, as they have done elsewhere. He should read more and ride along with HPD less; if he did, he would realize that no city in Texas has had that happen. Does he think that hiding his head in the ___ keeps them out of Texas?
During the interview Whitmire emphasized that there had not been an ICE surge in Houston because “we have been very responsible” making clear exactly HPD’s stance when dealing with individuals, “We don’t ask people when we have contact with them, their immigration status,” said Whitmire. Source
Not sure why there was a sudden change of heart from Whitmire. I am assuming he has a heart.
I subscribe to both the New York Times and the Houston Chronicle, and I did not notice that they have walked back anything.
Something is occurring that would get the MAGA man to come out and say we are not contacting ICE. Could it be that any cooperation between HPD is way down and that they are unable to solve crimes where undocumented individuals would have stepped forward to bear witness? Is that what is bothering the Mayor? Could it be that, as he claimed, he would lower the increase in crime and make it his first priority? Whatever it may be, I don’t trust John Whitmire to tell the truth.
Something brought out the two-sided Whitmire when, with Democrats, he acts like a Democrat. When it is with the MAGAs, he acts like a MAGA.
My suspicions are that Whiitmire, via the City of Houston, is providing information to ICE about people who are not here legally.
As to the Houston Chronicle walking anything back;
As our local leaders, including our mayor, police chief and sheriff, hem and haw over the nature of ICE’s presence here in Houston, our region has led the country in ICE arrests. Source
Attorney General Ken Paxton’s office says state investigators have detained 50 illegal aliens in the Houston area and turned them over to federal authorities for deportation. These immigration enforcement operations are being done in collaboration with President Donald Trump’s administration.
Sydnie Henry writes the Office of the Attorney General’s Criminal Investigation Division recently executed raids at multiple locations and businesses throughout the greater Houston area that were “known to promote or be connected with criminal activity.”
The operations reportedly led to the detention of 50 individuals in the country illegally, who were then transferred to the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement for deportation proceedings.
Paxton framed the detentions as part of a broader pushback against an invasion of illegal aliens under the Biden administration.
