I do wonder why Whitmire could find billions of dollars for fire and police pay raises, but he can’t find a few million to get the garbage trucks running on time.

Whitmire has been mayor for a year and a half, and I keep reading about murders that seem to be occurring more and more often.

I don’t have to read about garbage collection, as the green recycling cans and heavy trash are still sitting curbside. We are in hurricane season, and high winds and high water could send the heavy trash debris and green cans floating down the street. As one person wrote on Facebook, he had never seen Houston so green as he watched the green trash cans float down his street.

Houston, unlike the majority of major cities across the United States, is seeing an uptick in homicides in 2025, compared to the year before.

As of Monday, Houston had seen 112 homicides, compared to 104 through the same period in 2024, according to the Houston Police Department. A spokesperson for the department stressed the numbers were preliminary and subject to change.
