Well, Houstonians need not wander any longer if the Black Community would allow the Latino Community to maintain one Congressional District. The answer is NO. One of the Black candidates currently running for the 18th has announced that he will be running in the 29th primary.
All I can say is that the dam has broken, and Slater will be one of many running in that primary. Don’t expect a Latino to keep the district, as they said about the only way to keep Hispanics is if only Hispanics run. Latinos in Houston need about 70% Latino adult age voters to win a district. They could align themselves with the gay community like most of the present elected Latino leadership has, but dang, they forgot to include a lot of gay voters in the new 29th. Since I haven’t seen the demographics of the new 29th, it is possible that a Republican Latino could win if Latinos are willing to be swing voters. They do that for city council candidates; that is how Julian Ramirez got elected to an at-large position. Orlando Sanchez almost became mayor with such a coalition.
