Do our leaders only represent those who vote? Do our leaders only represent those who are legally here? Well, they should represent everyone in their district regardless of legal status. Hence, when I read an article from a previous Houston Chronicle writer about how progressives ignored the wishes of Respected Hispanic leaders, it made me want to throw up with disgust.
Latino leaders stand by Whitmire. Progressives should pay attention.
“It hurts us to our f______ core,” state Rep. Armando Walle, D-Houston, said in a viral tirade posted on social media back in 2023. “And you don’t understand that, you don’t live in our skin. And that’s what pisses me off.”
As I saw Walle with Houston Mayor John Whitmire earlier this month, I couldn’t stop thinking about that moment two years ago when Republicans tried to stop discussion on Senate Bill 4, a bill that would empower local law enforcement to act as immigration agents. Walle, a proud and sensible Democrat, has devoted much of his adult life to fighting for Latinos. He was speaking for many of us when he candidly confronted his colleagues.
Yes, Armando Walle did do that then, but what has he done since the roundup and mistreatment of people who are questioned simply because of how they look, work at, or choose what language to communicate in?
None of the Hispanic leaders that the opinion writer mentioned have stood firmly to condemn the actions of what ICE is doing and what Whitmire is also claiming to be the national model, so that Trump and Abbott don’t get offended. I have heard Sylvia Garcia kinda wants to stand up, but seems afraid to do so. The only Hispanic elected official who seems to have a voice, granted not a loud voice, is State Representative Christina Moreles.
Please don’t bring up how Whitmire was nominating two Latinas to somewhat powerful positions. While that may be important, it is much more critical that the City’s workforce reflects the community. Those are jobs that allow parents to save money to send their children to college, to have health insurance, and to take paid vacations and sick days.
It was insulting to see the Harris County Democratic Party ignore some of the most respected Latino leaders in Houston and Harris County. State Sen. Carol Alvarado, state Reps. Walle, Ana Hernandez and Mary Ann Perez along with Harris County Commissioners Adrian Garcia and Lesley Briones signed on to a letter urging party unity over “a divisive resolution.”
From that long list of worthless, impotent Latinx leaders, the only one that I can vote for is Lesley Briones. I did last time, but next November I will not be casting a vote for her, I can not support such a weak and worthless elected official. I chose not to run for re-election as a Democratic precinct chair. I did not want to be obligated to support Democrats like here.
Let us wait and see what happens in the primary between Sylvia Garcia and Jarvis Johnson. I am wishing that Jarvis Johnson wins because here in Harris County, the African-American elected officials are the ones who have stood up to what is happening to way too many brown skinned folks.
I have no idea who the opinion writer is, but he should stick to what he does: writing about sports.
The weakness of our elected leaders seems to be spreading like a disease, or was it always there?
SAN JUAN, Texas – Businesses and organizations that have been impacted by ICE raids, such as construction companies, should put more pressure on local elected officials to speak out.
This is the view of community group La Unión del Pueblo Entero.
“I think the time for different industries or local entrepreneurs or business owners to speak out and start pushing elected officials to do more is now,” said Dani Marrero Hi, deputy director of LUPE.
“We may not always be agreeing on everything, and certainly on the topic of immigration. But we can agree that right now we need to protect immigrant families, especially so people can show up to work, to be able to pay their bills. We need to be pushing our elected officials to do more, and we shouldn’t take their answers of well, this is a federal issue so there’s nothing I can do about it.”
LUPE is not happy that some elected officials are shrugging their shoulders and saying, we do not like what ICE is doing, but what can we do, it is a federal issue.
