I used to live in the 9th Congressional District, but it was redrawn, and I now find myself in the 7th Congressional District. I had not intended to write anything about other elections I could not vote in, but the Houston Chronicle published an article about one of the candidates. It is a pro piece pushing for Terry Virts.
Here is a link to the Chronicle article; it is free, but one must provide an email address.
If I lived in the new 9th, I would be supporting Terry Virts. I believe he is the best candidate who has a chance to defeat whoever wins the Republican primary there.
Whoever wins the Republican primary will have a ton of money; most people expect a run-off between Mealer and Cain.
So what did the Chronicle opinion writer have to say about the two leading candidates?
But it was the way Terry Virts said it — slightly awkward and uncomfortable — that made me feel, strangely, a flicker of hope. It made him seem down to earth. Like maybe he really would stand up for the everyday Texan, and actually stop the nonsense.
Virts, a retired Air Force colonel, flew 45 combat missions over Korea, Germany and Iraq. He’s also a former astronaut who has done three spacewalks and spent more than 200 days in the International Space Station, commanding his crew through harrowing life-or-death decisions.
But on Monday, dressed in his suburban-lumberjack best – blue flannel tucked into blue jeans – with sensible black tennis shoes and the sort of sunglasses your dad might wear to a Nascar race, Terry was just …Terry. The kind of guy whose Saturday morning tradition is getting a McDonalds McGriddle. Who drives a Ford Mustang and uses words like “awesome” and “cool” and “heck.”
When someone did — miraculously — open, it was José who handled most of the pitch. Terry speaks four languages, but only “un poquito” Spanish.
Terry speaks four languages, but very little Spanish. Spanish is the most spoken language in the Americas. Why would Terry think so little about a language that is the second most spoken in the world? Is it the people who speak it that he has problems with?
AI Overview

Spanish is the most spoken language in the Americas, with over 400 to 500 million speakers across Latin America, the US, and other regions. It is the dominant language in 19 countries and is rapidly growing in the United States.
Key Languages in the Americas:
- Spanish: Over 418–496 million speakers.
- English: Over 280–290 million speakers, primarily in the US and Canada.
- Portuguese: Approximately 209–215 million speakers, mostly in Brazil.
- French: Approximately 14 million speakers.
Ms. DEI Chronicle opinion writer may have miswritten, as I could only find that Terry Virts spoke three languages: English, Russian, and French. Why did I call her a DEI hire? Looking at her or her name, one would never guess she was Mexican.

Not exactly someone who has lived the experiences of the Latinos that live and vote in the Congressional 9th District.
We can usually find something to write negatively about, even though it doesn’t mean shit. We don’t have to push for someone or try to destroy others in the process.
As I said in the beginning, I would vote for Virts. I would have supported him if he had stayed in the Senate race as a Democrat.

I do not know Ms. Gutierrez, but I have met her numerous times. As to why a name change, maybe because she got divorced and remarried, who knows, and who cares.
Supposedly, the Mexican-American astronaut José Hernández is campaigning with Virts.
