HPD is still waiting on ICE- unless things have changed in HPD, if police wait, nothing will happen to them. If the police don’t wait, nothing will happen to them. I should know something about HPD.
My first wife was an HPD officer, Sgt. She was murdered by her police boyfriend years after the divorce, and the motto of HPD has always been do nothing, and you will never get in trouble. In fact, they have so much money and time invested in training and keeping police officers, and a contract that makes it almost impossible to fire them. Most police officers are very good people, but, like any organization, there are some bad apples. Two of my brothers are ex-HPD and have a nephew who is an HPD officer.
I am the president of a civic organization and have worked with many police officers over the years.
The union is making a mistake by telling the public that they will continue calling ICE and holding people for thirty minutes with the expectation that ICE will show up. They are making our city less safe. If the person they stopped has a criminal warrant or a warrant signed by a judge, they should be taken to jail. If they have reason to file criminal charges, take them to jail. The people at the jail will call ICE. Criminals will be taken off the streets.
I am not an advocate for illegal immigration; all my life, I have been against it. I was not in favor of the Amnesty, but they promised us that all persons looking for work would be E-Verified. It never happened because the desire for cheap labor by mostly Republican-owned businesses stopped that from happening.
Both Democrats and Republicans have worked against the working men and women of America, with NAFTA signed by Bill Clinton, and allowing China into the WTO also by Bill Clinton. NAFTA was passed largely with Republican support. If our country keeps giving away our good-paying jobs, how long before we become a second-rate country? The billionaires and the large companies don’t pay their fair share of taxes.
Americans do not need to keep allowing cheap labor to keep coming in, and certainly, we should not support some groups like we did the Cubans and the Vietnamese.

So anyone who expected the union and/or the police union’s leadership to do anything differently should not have. Politically, the police union is not that strong, but the media makes them out to be; they are not. The firemen’s union is a much more powerful organization.
