John Whitmire has found one dumping ground that never closes: the previous administration. Nearly three years into his term, Houston’s mayor is still pointing backward when residents ask why basic city services are failing them.
Sunnyside residents told ABC13 that restrictions at the Sunbeam waste drop-off facility are getting people turned away and contributing to illegal dumping in their neighborhood. Whitmire’s response was familiar: “That is a condition that we inherited.” He promised improvements through the reorganization of Solid Waste into Public Works.
The city’s own published rules complicate that explanation. A city notice announcing hours effective November 3, 2024, with John Whitmire identified as mayor, still listed a 16-foot trailer limit. The current rules reduce that limit to 10 feet, prohibit U-Hauls, and bar vehicles arriving with both a loaded truck bed and a trailer.
The tighter restrictions were already being publicized by September 7, 2026, when Oak Meadows Civic Club warned its residents about the smaller trailers and prohibited vehicles. The precise effective date remains unconfirmed, but the documented change in published requirements occurred during Whitmire’s administration.
Residents deserve an explanation of what those restrictions accomplish. If a homeowner loads a truck and trailer to clean up a property, why should arriving with both become a reason to turn that person away? How does requiring another trip help a neighborhood struggling with dumped furniture and debris?
Whitmire promises longer hours and more helpful employees. He should also explain who tightened access, why it was necessary, and what practical disposal options remain for residents affected by those decisions. Moving a department into Public Works does not answer those questions.
The previous administration is a convenient target because it cannot change today’s rules or manage today’s employees. Those responsibilities belong to the people currently running Houston.
Whitmire can keep pointing at Sylvester Turner. Sunnyside residents still need somewhere to put their trash.
