Meme’s Crystal Ball Predicts a Democratic Sweep in Harris County
My crystal ball predicts Democrats will sweep Harris County’s countywide elections on November 3. ABC13’s latest election story helped bring that picture into focus, although its headline points readers toward Democratic disappointment.
ABC13 reports that Harris County broke early-voting records in 2018, too, and Democrats still lost statewide. That is true. Republicans can lose Harris County and still win Texas. The article makes that distinction, but the local outcome deserves just as much attention.
Democrats swept Harris County in 2018. Lina Hidalgo defeated Republican County Judge Ed Emmett, and Democrats captured all 59 county judicial races on the ballot. The election that disappointed Democrats statewide transformed their position in county government.
That is the precedent I see in the crystal ball. Another surge of early voting, another midterm election during a Trump presidency, and another opportunity for Democrats to carry their countywide ticket across the finish line. ABC13 correctly cautions that turnout totals cannot reveal whom people selected. My prediction is that this turnout will produce another Democratic sweep of Harris County.
Texas is a separate prediction for another look into the crystal ball. Here in Harris County, I am calling a countywide Democratic sweep next week.
The crystal ball has spoken. We will see whether it needs polishing on November 4.
