When Lupe Valdez ran for governor, I supported her with my vote and money. I am not anti-gay; I am anti-bigots and racists like Annise Parker.
There is only one candidate who will work hard for the entire community: Letitia Plummer. If you like people who are biased and discriminate, then support Annise Parker. But I may break my promise to never vote for a Republican if Parker is the candidate in November. A Republican would be fairer to all than Annise Parker.
I know that the editorial members are not stupid, but I have known them to be biased and partial to people who support the homosexual agenda. With their support of Annise Parker and the throwing out that Plummer is a Muslim woman, they seem to continue the same spiteful beliefs that Gay is right.
The Chronicle knows that the Muslim religion is under attack by the MAGAs here in Texas, and they seem to take some special joy in making sure that people know that Plummer is a Muslim. I believe that is intentional on their part. One thing I extremely dislike is the hate of others because of their race or religion. A long time ago, here in the district where I reside, we had two Republicans running, one just happened to be Muslim. His name was Khan. I was prepared to vote for the white guy until he put out an extremely racist mailer.
In the early 2000s and 2010s, M.J. Khan, an Asian American, faced opposition campaigns. While Khan himself has been affiliated with the Democratic party (and previously as a Republican for Texas State House), certain PAC-funded flyers from conservative and opposing entities generated massive backlash. Opponents and civil rights groups condemned these pieces as “gutter politics” or “dog whistles” because they attempted to use the “birds of a feather” tagline alongside images of Khan and other minority leaders to smear them by association
Chronicle endorsement of Parker
Parker’s time as mayor saw Houston increasing funding for drainage infrastructure, building out hike-and-bike trails along the bayous, tackling homelessness with a “housing first” agenda, and making difficult budget cuts in the midst of the global financial crisis. She served in city government through Hurricanes Ritas and Katrina, and as mayor navigated a disastrous drought. No doubt Parker will bring some much-needed stability to the county judge seat.
She faces former Council Member Letitia Plummer, 55, a dentist by trade and the first Muslim woman on City Council. Plummer is largely running to continue the progressive policy agendas pursued — not always successfully — by incumbent County Judge Lina Hidalgo.
I know that the title will bring accusations by the Gay community of my being homophobic. It won’t be the first time, and they are welcome to their beliefs.
I grew up in a segregated school district as an American who had a Spanish surname and darker skin than the white, privileged people. I recognized discrimination even at a very early age. In my experience, I have found that the group of people who tend to discriminate the most are Gay people. They come in all different colors and ethnicities, so they discriminate against people who are not Gay with what I consider impunity.
Robert Gallegos said it best when he stated that he would work for the Gay community as a council member. Not the Latino community, the Gay community. I have a good memory, and things like that don’t get forgotten.
I met Annise Parker when she was first elected to the City Council. I was the Chief of Staff for a council member at the time. I knew people who worked in the Controller’s Office when Parker was Controller. I inquired about her hires, and they all told me the same thing: her propensity to hire Gay people, who may or may not have been as qualified as non-gay people.
I have nothing against Gay people, but I do hate discrimination in any form or manner.
