In this special election, Latino voters backed the Democratic candidate by an astonishing margin, 85% to 15%, according to VoteHub. This is the political cost of an administration that has chosen xenophobia and cruelty as governing tools, unleashing a campaign of intimidation and violence against immigrant communities and assuming those voters would tolerate it.
Talarico has already done irreparable harm to Democrats with either his stupidity or his racism. How many of the Houston editorial staff who made the decision have ever walked in the shoes of a Black man who overcame the odds to succeed?
I hate to burst Talarico’s bubble, but he won in 2018; he should give a lot of credit to Beto O’Rourke, whose very large tail helped get a lot of Democrats elected for the first time, including Lina Hidalgo here in Harris County.
