Eighty Years Later, Estela Finally Walked the Graduation Stage

In 1946, Estela Gallegos Pérez was supposed to finish her education at Martin High School in Laredo. Instead, a mistaken tuberculosis diagnosis kept her from returning to school. Eighty years later, at age 100, she finally walked the graduation stage alongside the Class of 2026. laredoisd.org
The ceremony took place May 26 at Sames Auto Arena. For the young graduates, it marked the beginning of another chapter. For Estela, it also completed a chapter that had remained unfinished for most of her life. laredoisd.org
Born in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, Estela later became an American citizen and made her home across the river. She remembered walking to school because the buses did not take children there. When she was barred from returning, a doctor’s later clarification failed to restore the opportunity she had lost. www.telemundolaredo.tv
But Estela continued her education. She earned a GED through Laredo Junior College and worked for 18 years as a substitute teacher at Lamar Middle School. The Laredo Morning Times reports that she completed the requirements for a Martin diploma years before this ceremony, but the pandemic prevented her from walking the stage then. lmtonline.com
She also supported student scholarships. Some graduates beside her had benefited from her generosity—the woman denied her own graduation had helped others reach theirs. lmtonline.com
A diploma cannot return the years she lost. But the ceremony honored both the young woman whose schooling was interrupted and the older woman who kept believing in education.
